The people at Techcrunch did a great job writing a post comparing the different the different online services to share files based on several characteristics, these are some of the sites:

Box.net is probably the most commonly-known site featured here. But I couldn’t keep it from the list because it’s really a good one and despite all its features, it’s actually simple to use. The light version is not so attractive though. Here’s what you get: File uploads up to 25MB/file

Rapidshare is lacking in features & design, but if you’re looking for a one-click file host, you came to the right place. Founded in 2006, the service is the twelfth most visited homepage in the world. With Rapidshare, users can upload big files (200MB) in one step and subsequently make them available to friends and family via the download link

You can read the complete list and analysis here

inclination to look up information using the shell prompt, the Command-Line Fu site explains how to query Wikipedia using the built-in dig utility.

The idea is simple—you can use the dig command to look up DNS records, including text records attached to a DNS entry, and somebody created an interface that pulls back the Wikipedia summary for an article by querying the records from the command line.

To do this for yourself, use the following syntax from your shell prompt, replacing the keyword with the single word you are trying to look up. Because this uses the command-line dig tool, this should work natively on Linux, but Windows users need to have Cygwin installed.

dig +short txt .wp.dg.cx

Hit the link for the full explanation, including how to wrap it into a shell script for easy querying from the shell prompt.

I have been test driving the chrome browser linux builds, I’m impressed with the stability and interface of the browser. It feels fast and sleek. At first when they released the builds, the drawback was that it did not had flash support, which now days is a pain in the ass.

Google Chrome is the official build and Chromium is the development branch of Chrome. Some of the commands below allow you to add Flash support for Chromium, not Chrome.

Install Chromium in Ubuntu

sudo su
echo "deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/chromium-daily/ppa/ubuntu jaunty main #chromium-browser" > /etc/apt/sources.list.d/chromium.list
sudo apt-key adv --recv-keys --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com 0xfbef0d696de1c72ba5a835fe5a9bf3bb4e5e17b5
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install chromium-browser

Flash Support

sudo cp /usr/lib/flashplugin-installer/libflashplayer.so /usr/lib/chromium-browser/plugins

Here’s a list of America’s 10 most wanted botnets, based on an estimate by security firm Damballa of botnet size and activity in the United States.

It’s not everyday that there is a public security exploit published for the Linux kernel, yet that is what happened in early July. Though the flaw itself was patched in the mainline Linux kernel several weeks prior to the public exploit code being published, not all users may have patched. It could have been a lot worse. (Read More)

Here is a really interesting post from Linux Planet, in regards to Why programmer code for Free? Instead of using a Shareware type of deal. Sometimes the benefits of open source outweight the benefit of a few dollars.

Many tens of thousands of words have been printed over the years in attempts to answer the question “Why would anyone want to code for free?” Sometimes it is phrased more bitingly, like “Richard Stallman thinks programmers should work for free and starve to death!” With rare exceptions, various pundits, analysts, and random passersby have tried to explain these issues without asking any actual developers, or having any coding experience themselves. And thus in a daring deed of the blindingly obvious, I asked several experienced, professional developers for their views on the subject. These will be published next week in Part 2. Today I’m going to look at the value of Free/Open Source software to the non-coder, us lowly end users. (Read More)
